Progress of the World’s Women 2015-2016: Transforming Economies, Realizing Rights, UN Women’s flagship report, shows that, all too often, women’s economic and social rights are held back, because they are forced to fit into a ‘man’s world’. But, it is possible to move beyond the status quo, to picture a world where economies are built with women’s rights at their heart. It is being published as the international community comes together to define a transformative post-2015 development agenda, and coincides with the 20th anniversary commemoration of the landmark Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China which set out a comprehensive agenda to advance gender equality. - Access the full report here.

The new Akanu Institute of Learning and EQUALS Foundation page has gone live.

We believe education is imperative to growth and advancement in developing communities. The Centre for Equality is a major supporter of the EQUALS Foundation's project to establish a sustainable, free vocational educational and training institution that will focus on developing the latent potentialities of disadvantaged children and youth and create an environment to build their confidence and belief they can achieve their dreams.

The aim being to facilitate sustainability and community advancement through the project in Akanu, Ohafia.

The Centre for Equality is pleased to bring The Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG, former Justice of the High Court of Australia, to Adelaide where he will discuss the adoption of a national bill of rights in Australia.

During a distinguished career spanning five decades, Mr Kirby served as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia, President of the New South Wales Court of Appeal and, concurrently, the Court of Appeal of the Solomon Islands. He was appointed to the High Court in 1996 where he served for thirteen years.
The Centre for Equality is delighted to welcome The Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG to share his insights which will be followed by a Q&A session at this exclusive human rights event in Adelaide.

The Centre for Equality has been awarded local solutions funding for an innovative program in the Playford region of South Australia.  The Youth on the Move Sports Cadets will engage disengaged young people through a capacity building program aimed at strengthening the relationship between youth, their family and the wider community.  

Youth on the Move Cadets will focus on developing the potential of young people and giving them the confidence to dream.  Focused on addressing a range of self development and skills areas valuable to the sporting community, participants will both become accredited and confident to play and be of service to local sporting clubs.

 

Media Release

Local community groups across ten regions are set to receive more than $11 million to improve education, training and employment opportunities.

Minister for Human Services, Senator Jan McLucas and Member for Blaxland, Jason Clare announced the recipients of the second round of the Local Solutions Fund today at the Roundabout Youth Centre in Sefton.

"The 61 projects that have been allocated funding through this second round of the Local Solutions Fund have be en designed by the local community, for the local community," Senator McLucas said.

"By relying on local knowledge and expertise, we can improve the lives of people in a community. That's why supporting these projects is so important."

The Local Solutions Fund is part of the Australian Government's Better Futures, Local Solutions initiative, which identified ten regions around Australia where help is needed to improve employment, education and social participation.
